Pressure, Vibration and Sound Dampening
Pressure, vibration and sound dampening components are common industrial applications of porous metals. A pressure surge in a fluid delivery line can be dampened by reducing the fluid velocity as it passes through the series of small interconnected porosity channels. Many pressure gages have porous metal pressure snubbers built in prior to the gage to reduce the vibration of the indicating needle. The porosity can also act as an acoustical barrier and will dampen certain sound frequencies while other frequencies will pass through. Common applications include sound attenuators, exhaust silencers, sound mufflers and pressure equalizers.
